West Montrose Covered Bridge

The West Montrose Covered Bridge, also known as the "Kissing Bridge", is the last wooden covered bridge in Ontario and the oldest such bridge in Canada. Built in 1880–1881 mostly of oak and white pine by John Bear, the structure is still used by pedestrians, buggy traffic and vehicles weighing less than three tonnes. Since 1998, it has been owned and maintained by the Regional Municipality of Waterloo.

Heritage Landscape

The settlement of West Montrose is designated as a Cultural Heritage Landscape by the Township of Woolwich because of its history of pioneer settlement, its traditional bridges and the Old Order Mennonite culture.

Grand River

The Grand River, which flows through West Montrose, is a desirable canoeing location, particularly the stretch between West Montrose and Paris. There are a number of conservation areas along the river as well.

Trailways

There are over 90 kilometres of trail in Woolwich Township available for public use. The Kissing Bridge Trailway detours into West Montrose, but others, including the Avon Trail, the Grand Valley Trail, the Health Valley Trail, and the Lions Ring Trail are just a short drive away.
